Lakysha Travis
From Jackson, Mississippi, Lakysha Travis visited Milwaukee over the 4th of July weekend and thought, “it was quite interesting. I liked the atmosphere and I thought, well maybe this is a state where I could move on forward with life.” So she went back home, packed her bags, and moved her two daughters to Milwaukee. Adjusting to Milwaukee was difficult at first. When they moved in it was snowing out; something she had experienced very little of. Now of course she has adjusted to it and prefers the cooler summers here compared to Mississippi.
The weather and the city weren't just the only thing she had to adjust to. Ms. Lakysha has a big family back in Jackson and was used to the company of them, “We all lived in the same neighborhood. Basically, they all lived up the street. It's like you don't even have to tell anybody to come to your house, they just walk up. It was just like that, you just leave the door open, and everyone walks in and helps themselves.” Although she doesn't have any family here, she enjoys the community and the community BBQ’s because it reminds her of her family, “I love gatherings because it brings me back from home because we always had family gatherings. For me to not have any family here, I consider that as a family gathering because everyone gets together, eats, and talks”. Ms. Lakysha is glad she moved to the neighborhood. On her block, she feels safe and connected to her neighbors. She enjoys the community atmosphere and likes all the resources in the community, such as the UMCS and the garden on N 39th Street. After 4 years, she still likes the atmosphere of the city and is glad she moved herself and daughters here. |
